The Centenary Church

Christians in north-east DR Congo resolved to build a new church to celebrate the Centenary of the Anglican Church in Congo in 1996.

Making the first bricks (late 1995) - groups of Christians from various parishes came for periods of two or three days, in which typically three thousand bricks might be made:

Collecting rocks for the foundations (October 1996):

Digging the foundations (November 1996, just before the outbreak of the "liberation" war):

Levelling the floor (April 1998):

Preparing to cast the main ring beam (mid 1999):

Raising the roof frames (November 1999)
- no cranes available, so lots of manpower needed:

With the roof on, sometime in 2000. Still plenty to do: the tower, plastering, doors and windows...
